Boat Fire Safety Week

It’s Boat Fire Safety Week (27th May – 2nd June) To mark this occasion, we’d like to share the story of our CEO, Colin Chantler. A true waterman, Colin is not only a passionate boater, but an experienced firefighter, having served on the prestigious London Fire Bridge Fireboat!

Colin joined the London Fire Bridge, in 1987, serving as a Fireman at Purley, Norbury and Lambeth Fire Stations. In 2000 Colin decided to take the position of Watch Commander on London Fire Brigade’s Fireboat based at Lambeth. Day skippers and Yachtmasters qualifications were taken with the National Maritime Training Centre at North Kent College in Gravesend, training also took place out at sea as the Fire Brigade operations extended to 12 miles off shore.

10 years were spent on the Fireboat. One of the highlights being a safety boat for New Year Eve’s celebrations, anchored up on the water gave the best views of the firework display.

Boat and shore fires, rescues of persons from water and people stuck in mud were typical incidents attended. Regular attendance to rescues of people who attempted suicide, often successfully, by jumping of the bridges was too common place. Back then, mental health awareness wasn’t as prevalent as it is today.

Colin has shared some top tips with us on Fire Boat Safety:

  • Fit Alarms to Stay Safe: Smoke Alarms, Gas Leak indicators, Carbon Monoxide Alarms
  • Turn any cooking appliances off properly after use
  • Maintain your boat’s engine & fuel systems regularly
  • Ensure everyone on board knows the emergency and escape plan
  • Don’t go to sea without a VHF radio

Although the love for boats continued, and boating remains a keen hobby, Colin retired from the Fire Brigade in 2010 to dedicate his time to making Triangle Fire Systems the success that it is today. Colin, along with his brothers, established the company in 2006, driven by their shared recognition of the importance of fire sprinklers.

18 years later, and Colin and his brothers, continue to be passionate about fire protection, and are honoured to achieve this while running a successful family business.
