International Women in Engineering Day

History

2024 signifies the 11th anniversary of ‘International Women’s Day in Engineering,’ a day dedicated to honouring the exceptional women who have paved the way for future generations in the engineering and construction industries. The theme of 2024 is #EnchancedByEngineering, recognising the remarkable impact women in engineering have made on our society and everyday lives.

This celebration showcases that women can excel in this field. The origins of International Women in Engineering can be traced back to 1919, after the First World War. Whilst men were called to the front line to fight for their country, women enthusiastically took on engineering roles and were resolute in pursuing their careers in this domain, leading to the establishment of the ‘Women’s Engineering Society.’

On this day, we want to highlight the amazing women within our organisation.

Statistics

Regrettably, the UK’s average representation of women in this industry has declined from 16.5% in 2022 to 15.8%. Nevertheless, at Triangle, we are pleased to announce that 22% of our workforce comprises women, Additionally, all our female engineers receive fair pay, irrespective of gender. This achievement is significant considering the gender pay gap, with women earning up to a third less than their male counterparts.

Emma Wood, Design Engineer

“To be a successful women as an engineer is both a challenge and an achievement. Graduating from university in a male-dominated industry, you aren’t afraid to step over the threshold of innovation and challenge stereotypes. Overcoming bias as a woman, you have to be strong, not easily intimidated, believe in yourself and your work, and others will too.

Don’t let being female define you, I never have.”

Jade Barnett, Sprinkler Engineer

“Being a female engineer working on site in a male dominated industry I find very challenging, but I also find it very rewarding when I am able to demonstrate my knowledge in the field I work in. I enjoy working as an engineer as no two days are the same. I also get a sense of satisfaction knowing my chosen career path plays a role in saving lives.”

Triangle Fire Systems takes pride in it’s exceptional female workforce, who are ambitious and refuse to be limited by stereotypes when choosing their career paths; in fact, we actively support and encourage it!
